• '40’s Woodie - Hot Wheels della settimana

  '40's Woodie è un modellino piuttosto complesso. Lo chassis è composto da: una base in metallo non verniciata (parte inferiore), dalla carrozzeria anch'essa in metallo verniciata turchese metalflake, da un abitacolo in plastica marrone che simula il legno dove è agganciato un portapacchi (in questo caso porta surf) in plastica grigia non verniciata.

  

  

  Dal cofano emerge il V8 con convogliatore d'aria in plastica verniciata metallizzata argento presente anche nella griglia del radiatore, all'interno dell'abitacolo un elemento in plastica trasparente (vetri del parabrezza) e gli interni (cruscotto, sedili, ruota di scorta posteriore, etc.) in plastica nera. La carrozzeria presenta una serigrafia a 3 colori (fondo bianco e fiamme blu con particolari arancione) sui parafanghi anteriori.

  

  

  Altra parte stampata sono i surf del portapacchi, stampati in azzurro, blu e logo hotwheels arancione su fondo bianco. Le ruote sono le classice a 5 razze (SP5) serigrafate in argento.

  

  

  Il modellino rappresenta un'autovettura iconica del surf californiano, spesso riprodotta all'interno delle opere di Jim Phillips, famoso illutratore e graphic designer in auge dagli anni '60. L'opera più iconica di Jim è sicuramente la "mano urlante" del 1985 disegnata per Santa Cruz.

  

  

  

• '40’s Woodie - Hot Wheels of the week

  40's Woodie is a rather complex model. The chassis consists of: an unpainted metal base (lower part), the bodywork also made of metal painted turquoise metalflake, a brown plastic cockpit simulating wood where an unpainted grey plastic roof rack (in this case surf rack) is attached.

  

  

  From the bonnet emerges the V8 with a silver metallic painted plastic air duct also present in the radiator grille, inside the cockpit a transparent plastic element (windscreen glass) and the interior (dashboard, seats, rear spare wheel, etc.) in black plastic. The bodywork has a 3-colour screen print (white background and blue flames with orange details) on the front mudguards.

  

  

  Another printed part is the surf of the roof rack, printed in light blue, blue and orange hotwheels logo on a white background. The wheels are the classic 5-spoke wheels (SP5) screen-printed in silver.

  

  

  The model represents an iconic Californian surf car, often reproduced within the works of Jim Phillips, a famous illustrator and graphic designer in vogue since the 1960s. Jim's most iconic work is surely the 1985 ‘Screaming Hand’ designed for Santa Cruz.

  

  

  

• '72 Ford Gran Torino Sport - Hot Wheels della settimana

  L’Hot Wheels ’72 Ford Gran Torino Sport, raffigurata in foto e uscita nel 2012, fa parte della serie Muscle Car Mania: Ford. Il modellino presenta uno chassis composto da un blocco superiore in metallo verniciato verde e un blocco inferiore in plastica nera. Tra i due, è inserita una parte in plastica cromata color argento che forma l’anteriore della macchina (radiatore, gruppi ottici e paraurti), il posteriore (paraurti) e gli interni dell’abitacolo.

  

  

  La carrozzeria presenta una serigrafia in tricromia:

  • Nero: bande laterali, loghi Hot Wheels, sigle “351” laterali posteriori e bande sul cofano;

  • Bianco: scritta “Gran Torino Sport” sui lati, maniglie delle portiere, sigle “351” sul cofano;

  • Arancio: indicatori di direzione.

  Le ruote sono delle MC5 (Muscle Car a 5 razze), con cerchioni serigrafati in bianco.

  

  

  Curiosità

  La Ford Gran Torino deve la sua fama duratura e la sua iconicità nella cultura popolare principalmente alla televisione e al cinema. Il nome stesso della vettura, “Torino”, fu scelto dalla Ford per omaggiare l’omonima città italiana, all’epoca considerata la “Detroit europea”.

  Nel 1972 uscì una versione aggiornata e rivista, denominata “Gran Torino”. Il modellino riprodotto richiama fortemente la vettura protagonista dell’omonimo film di Clint Eastwood, Gran Torino. Nella pellicola, il veicolo incarna simbolicamente i valori americani del passato, che resistono stoicamente al cambiamento della società.

  

  

  Insieme al telefilm Starsky & Hutch (1975–1979), dove l’automobile — sempre una Gran Torino, ma dal design “rifrescato” in quanto modello del ’75 e ’76 — ha contribuito a trasformare questa vettura in un’icona universale del “sogno americano”.

• Avant Garde - Hot Wheels della settimana

  Avant Garde è un modellino che sintetizza la creatività del design automobilistico francese del dopoguerra. Infatti osservandola bene, la silouette ricorda la Citroën DS disegnata dall'industrial designer italiano Flaminio Bertoni nel 1955.

  

  

  La carrozzeria è formata da una parte superiore in metallo dorato e la parte inferiore in plastica perlata. L'abitacolo è sormontato da una "cupola" in plastica trasparente serigrafata in bianco per dare l'effetto "carrozzeria" al tettuccio.

  

  

  La parte in plastica trasparente si estende sotto la carrozzeria fino a spuntare fuori nella parte anteriore sotto forma di fanali. Gli interni sono realizzati con un elemento di plastica metallizzata argento che incorpora anche il paraurti posteriore.

  

  

  Infine sotto il frontale del cofano di trova il radiatore in metallo. Sul cofano è presente una serigrafia blu, bianca e rossa che riprende i colori della bandiera francese. Le ruote sono le OH5 (Open Hole 5-Spoke) che si differenziano dalle classiche SP5 per il fatto che sono bucate intorno al disegno delle 5 razze e hanno il profilo del "pneumatico" ribassato. Questa versione fa parte dei modellini nuovi che debuttarono nel 2009 (New Models).

  

  

  Altro riferimento di stile di questa Hot Wheels si può ritrovare nella Renaul Mégane seconda serie (2002) e nella Renault Avantime disegnate da Patrick Le Quément.

• Avant Garde - Hot Wheels of the week

  Avant Garde is a model that embodies the creativity of post-war French car design. In fact, looking at it closely, the silhouette is reminiscent of the Citroën DS designed by Italian industrial designer Flaminio Bertoni in 1955.

  

  

  The body consists of a gilded metal upper part and a pearly plastic lower part. The passenger compartment is topped by a transparent plastic ‘dome’ screen-printed in white to give the roof a ‘bodywork’ effect.

  

  

  The transparent plastic part extends under the bodywork until it pops out at the front in the form of headlights. The interior is made of a silver metallised plastic element that also incorporates the rear bumper.

  

  

  Finally, under the front of the bonnet is the metal radiator. On the bonnet there is a blue, white and red screen-printing in the colours of the French flag. The wheels are OH5 (Open Hole 5-Spoke), which differ from the classic SP5 in that they have holes around the 5-spoke design and have a lowered ‘tyre’ profile. This version is part of the new models that debuted in 2009 (New Models).

  

  

  Another style reference of this Hot Wheels can be found in the Renaul Mégane second series (2002) and the Renault Avantime designed by Patrick Le Quément.

• Chevroletor - Hot Wheels della settimana

  La Chevroletor è una Hot Wheels che si ispira alle auto nate per i record di velocità degli anni ‘30. Le forme mutuate dallo stile streamline, ricordano quelle della Mercedes W196R Streamliner degli anni ‘50 o quella della Auto Union Type C Streamliner di fine anni ‘30.

  

  

  

  Il modello in foto è la versione 2013 HW Racing: Track Aces. La scocca superiore è in metallo verniciato giallo, mentre quella inferiore è in plastica gialla. Il pezzo che da forma all’abitacolo è in plastica nera e si estende lateralmente e verso la parte anteriore definendo anche il radiatore, mentre il parabrezza è in plastica trasparente rossa.

  

  

  

  La scocca è serigrafata a 4 colori (nero, rosso, argento e bianco). Le ruote sono in plastica nera, modello MC5 (Manson Cheung* 5 razze) serigrafate in rosso metallizzato.

  *Il nome è stato originariamente frainteso per indicare le "Muscle Car" a 5 razze.

• Chevroletor - Hot Wheels of the week

  The Chevroletor is a Hot Wheels inspired by the speed record cars of the 1930s. The streamline styling is reminiscent of the Mercedes W196R Streamliner of the 1950s or the Auto Union Type C Streamliner of the late 1930s.

  

  

  

  The model pictured is the 2013 HW Racing: Track Aces version. The upper body is yellow painted metal, while the lower body is yellow plastic. The piece that shapes the cockpit is made of black plastic and extends laterally and towards the front defining the radiator, while the windscreen is made of transparent red plastic.

  

  

  

  The body is screen-printed in four colours (black, red, silver and white). The wheels are black plastic, model MC5 (Manson Cheung* 5-spoke) screen-printed in metallic red.

  *The name was originally misunderstood to mean the 5-spoke ‘Muscle Car’.

• Chevy Bel Air '57 - Hot Wheels della settimana

  Oggi, come modellino Hot Wheels, abbiamo un’icona americana degli anni ’50: la leggendaria Chevrolet Bel Air del 1957. Un’autovettura che vanta una ricorrente associazione con il telefilm Happy Days e incarna la voglia positiva di libertà che permeava l’America del dopoguerra.

  

  

  Questa versione celebra e richiama, nella livrea e nel brand, la “’’57 Edelbrock Chevy Bel Air”, realizzata dagli studenti dell’Ohio Technical College (OTC) come parte di un’iniziativa educativa (tra ottobre 2010 e maggio 2011), in collaborazione con la Edelbrock Performance Academy. L’obiettivo era trasformare un modello Hot Wheels in una versione reale e funzionante, offrendo agli studenti un’esperienza pratica nel restauro e nella personalizzazione di veicoli.

  

  

  Questo modello del 2010 (HW Performance) presenta la scocca superiore in metallo verniciato nero e argento satinato, con il logo Edelbrock serigrafato in rosso, bianco e nero sulle “code” posteriori; il numero 23 sulle portiere, sormontato dalla scritta “VIC”; nella parte laterale anteriore la scritta “carburated”; sul cofano, la scritta doppia “283 H.P.”, divisa da una doppia riga centrale; e il brand “Hot Wheels” come firma, adiacente alle ruote posteriori.

  La scocca inferiore è in plastica argento cromata, che compone anche i due paraurti, il radiatore e la fanaleria inferiore dell’automobile. Le ruote sono a cinque razze, serigrafate in rosso metallizzato. Infine, l’interno dell’abitacolo è in plastica rossa.

• Chevy Bel Air '57 - Hot Wheels of the week

  Today, as a Hot Wheels model, we have an American icon from the 1950s: the legendary 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air. A car that boasts a recurring association with the TV show Happy Days and embodies the positive desire for freedom that permeated post-war America.

  

  

  This version celebrates and recalls, in livery and branding, the “’57 Edelbrock Chevy Bel Air”, created by students at Ohio Technical College (OTC) as part of an educational initiative (between October 2010 and May 2011), in collaboration with the Edelbrock Performance Academy. The aim was to transform a Hot Wheels model into a real, working version, giving students hands-on experience in vehicle restoration and customisation.

  

  

  This 2010 model (HW Performance) features the upper body in black painted metal and satin silver, with the Edelbrock logo screen-printed in red, white and black on the rear “tails”; the number 23 on the doors, surmounted by the inscription “VIC”; on the front side, the inscription “carburated”; on the bonnet, the double inscription “283 H.P.”, divided by a double central line; and the “Hot Wheels” brand as a signature, adjacent to the rear wheels.

  The lower body is chrome-plated silver plastic, which also makes up the car's two bumpers, radiator and lower lights. The wheels are five-spoke, screen-printed in metallic red. Finally, the interior of the passenger compartment is red plastic.

• Cool-One – Hot Wheels della settimana

  Questa settimana arriva il rombante Cool-One, versione fantasiosa del famoso furgone dei gelati Chevrolet Step-Van, veicolo protagonista in tantissimi film americani (IMCB).

  

  

  Questa versione fa parte dell’Insectirides 5-Pack del 2010 e presenta una scocca superiore in metallo bianco perlato. La scocca inferiore è in plastica grigio scuro, che si estende fino a formare il radiatore e i fanali (nella parte anteriore), i tubi di scarico (sui lati del veicolo), i due portelli inferiori e il paraurti (nella parte posteriore).

  

  

  Internamente sono incastonati tre elementi in plastica: le due aree del parabrezza in verde trasparente, la seduta e la parte anteriore dell’abitacolo in color tabacco, e i due convogliatori d’aria che fanno capolino dal tetto del veicolo.

  Ai lati del furgone è presente una complessa grafica serigrafata a quattro colori (giallo, verde, oro e nero), con la scritta “EXTERMINATOR” ad arco, affiancata dal disegno di una testa di calabrone che sovrasta due tibie incrociate, richiamando la bandiera dei pirati.

  Le ruote sono delle PR5 (Phil Riehlman a 5 razze), serigrafate in oro.

• Cool-One – Hot Wheels of the week

  This week sees the arrival of the roaring Cool-One, an imaginative version of the famous Chevrolet Step-Van, ice cream van, a vehicle featured in so many American films (IMCB).

  

  

  This version is part of the 2010 Insectirides 5-Pack and features a pearl-white metal upper body. The lower body is made of dark grey plastic, which extends to form the radiator and headlights (at the front), the exhaust pipes (on the sides of the vehicle), the two lower doors and the bumper (at the rear).

  

  

  Internally, three plastic elements are embedded: the two windscreen areas in transparent green, the seat and front part of the passenger compartment in tobacco colour, and the two real air ducts peeping out of the vehicle roof.

  On the sides of the van is an intricate four-colour screen-printed graphic (yellow, green, gold and black), with the words ‘EXTERMINATOR’ in an arc, flanked by the design of a hornet's head above two crossed shinbones, recalling the pirate flag.

  The wheels are PR5 (Phil Riehlman 5-spoke), screen-printed in gold.

• Double Vision - Hot Wheels della settimana

  Modello iconico di fine anni '90, Double Vision, come suggerisce il nome, è caratterizzato da una doppia carrozzeria collegata nella parte centrale da due alettoni. Questa versione (2006 - Mainline), presenta una scocca inferiore in plastica nera e superiore in metallo verniciato bianco perlato.

  

  

  Sul lato sinistro troviamo riprodotto un imponente motore formato da un doppio V8 di plastica cromata, mentre sulla destra, l'abitacolo, che ricorda una cabina da pilota di caccia della II Guerra Mondiale, realizzato in plastica trasparente arancione.

  

  

  Ai lati della carrozzeria disegni di fiamme tra i 2 assi delle ruote e loghi di fantasia in coda, il tutto serigrafato a 3 colori (giallo caldo, rosso e bordeaux). Le ruote sono le PR5, una linea di ruote a 5 razze (con serigrafia cromata) disegnate da Phil Riehlman nel 2000.

  

  

  Stilisticamente il modello, sembra ispirarsi alle forme del caccia Lockheed P-38 Lightning, all'auto di fantasia Hayabusa dell'anime Ken Falco e non ultima la Renault Etoile Filante, auto francese protagonista sul lago salato di Bonneville nello Utah, luogo leggendario dove si tengono i record di velocità su terra.

  

  

  
• Double Vision - Hot Wheels of the week

  An iconic model from the late 1990s, Double Vision, as its name suggests, is characterised by a double body connected in the central part by two ailerons. This version (2006 - Mainline), features a black plastic lower body and pearl white painted metal upper body.

  

  

  On the left side is an imposing engine consisting of a chrome plastic double V8, while on the right side is the cockpit, reminiscent of a World War II fighter pilot's cabin, made of transparent orange plastic.

  

  

  On the sides of the bodywork are flame patterns between the two wheel axles and fancy logos on the tail, all screen-printed in three colours (warm yellow, red and burgundy). The wheels are the PR5, a line of 5-spoke wheels (with chrome screen printing) designed by Phil Riehlman in 2000.

  

  

  Stylistically, the model seems to be inspired by the shapes of the Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter plane, the Hayabusa fantasy car from the anime Ken Falco, and last but not least the Renault Etoile Filante, a French car starring on Utah's Bonneville Salt Lake, a legendary location where land speed records are held.

  

  

  
• Fast Gassin - Hot Wheels della settimana

  Fast Gassin, modellino originale Hot Wheels che riproduce un camion cisterna disegnato da John Violette. Ai lati della cabina emergono 8 esuberanti tubi di scarico cromati. Questa versione è precedente alla modifica del 2016, dove è stato eliminato il doppio asse posteriore e la parte in metallo della cabina si estende anche sulla parte superiore del serbatoio, per aumentare il peso e la stabilità durante il gioco.

  

  

  Il camion risulta un modellino piuttosto complesso, formato da 4 parti in plastica e una in metallo. La cabina in metallo bordeaux si incastra con la plastica gialla dei copriruota, che a sua volta ospita la cisterna in plastica nera e tiene ferma la parte in plastica cromata dei tubi di scarico, paraurti anteriore e radiatore. Sotto il tutto viene fermato dalla scocca in plastica grigia.

  

  

  Il serbatoio presenta una stampa a 3 colori (rosso, bianco e giallo). La scritta “HOT WHEELS OIL” utilizza un font particolare – Street Van Powerhouse di House Industries – lo stesso lettering presente nel logo del primo Grand Theft Auto. Tant’è che questo modellino ce lo possiamo immaginare visto dall’alto, mentre scorrazza per le strade di Liberty City.

  

  

  Le ruote sono in plastica nera, modello 5SP (5 razze), con serigrafia in argento metallizzato. Questa versione fa parte della serie Hot City Works, edizione 2012.

• Hot Wheels drawings

  The Hot Wheels drawing series began as a pastime during the 2020 lockdown. Over time I then continued to create new designs. Today those who wish can purchase these drawings (unique pieces, no reproductions) on my Etsy shop “OSDesignStudio”.

• Hot Wheels Passion

  The passion for these small, fast, colourful toy cars blossomed at an early age. Although I had very few models back then, I enjoyed trading them with friends and inventing adventurous stories with them. They were a source of fun and creativity.

  Then a few years ago while I was shopping in the hypermarket near my home, seeing them on the shelf in the toy aisle rekindled my passion.

  It happened that every time I went shopping, I invariably bought one.

  Once the buying frenzy was over, after keeping them on display at home for several months, I put them away in a dedicated box.

  Come 2020, with the arrival of the dramatic pandemic, to pass the time during lockdown weekends I started to draw some models in crayons on cards.

  Another stall period, then in 2023, I refined the design idea I had in mind and started to create designs consistently.

• Hyper Mite - Hot Wheels della settimana

  Questa settimana arriva Hyper Mite, uno dei modelli Hot Wheels più corti mai creati, opera di Mark Jones. Praticamente una city car con le fattezze da insetto.

  

  

  Vista frontalmente grazie alla forma di fanali e radiatore, ricorda la testa di una formica, enfatizzata dalle due arcate laterali presenti nella carrozzeria che ricordano le antenne. Questa versione del 2009 (HW Designs) presenta una carrozzeria in metallo verniciata in arancio perlato, con serigrafia di fiamme gialle ai lati e scritta bianca Jones RC sui parafanghi posteriori.

  

  

  L'abitacolo monoposto è caratterizzato da un manubrio da bicicletta sovrastato da una calotta in plastica gialla trasparente. Seguono 2 grandi tubi di scappamento a forma di cono in metallo che si innestano con un doppio motore bicilindrico a V da motocicletta in plastica cromata.

  

  

  

  La parte inferiore è in plastica nera con parti cromate localizzate nelle protuberanze che disegnano i fanali e il radiatore centrale. Le ruote anteriori sono della Micro sp5 (micro a 5 razze) con serigrafiua cromata e le posteriori delle PR5 (Phil Riehlman 5 razze).

• Hyper Mite - Hot Wheels of the week

  This week sees the arrival of Hyper Mite, one of the shortest Hot Wheels models ever created, by Mark Jones. Practically a city car with the features of an insect.

  

  

  Seen from the front, thanks to the shape of the headlights and radiator, it is reminiscent of an ant's head, emphasised by the two side arches in the bodywork that resemble antennae. This 2009 version (HW Designs) features a metal body painted in pearl orange, with yellow flames screen-printed on the sides and white Jones RC lettering on the rear mudguards.

  

  

  The single-seater cockpit features a bicycle handlebar topped by a transparent yellow plastic canopy. This is followed by two large metal cone-shaped exhaust pipes that engage with a twin-cylinder V-twin motorbike engine made of chrome-plated plastic.

  

  

  

  The underside is black plastic with chrome parts located in the protuberances that form the headlights and central radiator. The front wheels are from the Micro sp5 (5-spoke micro) with chrome serigraphy and the rear wheels from the PR5 (Phil Riehlman 5-spoke).

• Passione Hot Wheels

  La passione per queste piccole e veloci macchinine colorate è sbocciata già in tenera età. Anche se ai tempi avevo pochi modellini, mi divertivo a scambiarli con gli amici e inventare storie avventurose con loro. Erano fonte di divertimento e di creatività.

  Poi qualche anno fa mentre facevo la spesa nell'ipermercato vicino a casa, vedendole sullo scaffale della corsia dedicato ai giochi è riaffiorata la passione.

  Accadeva che ogni volta che andavo a far spesa, immancabilmente ne compravo una.

  Finita la frenesia dell'acquisto, dopo averli tenuti esposti in casa per parecchi mesi, li ho messi via in una scatola dedicata.

  Giunto il 2020, con l'arrivo della drammatica pandemia, per far passare il tempo durante i fine settimana in lockdown ho cominciato a disegnare a pastelli alcuni modellini su dei cartoncini.

• Purrfect Speed - Hot Wheels della settimana

  Con questo post inizio (forse) la rubrica Hot Wheels della settimana. Come la copertina di Linus o l’orsacchiotto da bambino, provo piacere a tenermi sotto il monitor del lavoro un modellino, che mi rallegra la giornata e mi riporta al periodo della mia infanzia. Graphic designer per professione, osservo questi giocattoli con occhio attento ed entusiasta, osservando e “degustando” la creatività che ogni modello presenta nella sua forma e nella cromia.

  

  

  Purrfect Speed è un modellino a forma di gatto. La parola Purrfect, che definisce la macchinina, è una crasi tra “perfect” e l’onomatopea “purr”, che indica le fusa del gatto. La prima edizione risale al 2016 ed è stata disegnata da Larry Wood, il principale e storico designer di Hot Wheels dagli albori fino ad oggi. La parte superiore è in plastica arancio serigrafata a due colori (bordeaux e azzurro metallizzato) con motivi che riprendono le striature dei gatti. Nella parte centrale cava emerge il V8, sormontato dall’imponente convogliatore d’aria, che fa parte della struttura metallica inferiore.

  

  

  Altro dettaglio visibile nella parte anteriore del modello è la presenza degli artigli e delle fauci, delineati nella parte in metallo, che completano l’aspetto “felino” del giocattolo. Le ruote sono in plastica bianco perla, modello 5SP (5 razze), con serigrafia in azzurro metallizzato. Questa versione fa parte del pack da 5 “Street Beasts”, uscito in negozio nel 2024.
